Simple syrup, which is just sugar water, is a staple that every kitchen needs. Especially if you like to sweeten your coffee or tea at home. In this blog, I am going to tell you how to make simple syrup at home and how to best use it in your everyday lives!

How to Make Simple Syrup at Home
It's super easy and only requires two ingredients: water and sugar! And you only need three dishes: a whisk, a small saucepan, and a jar (I guess four dishes if you include the lid for the jar).
You will want to use equal parts sugar and water, so I usually use 1 cup of each!
Instructions
Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan.
Heat the mixture over high heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves completely.
Once the sugar is dissolved and mixture is boiling, turn heat down to medium low. Let simmer on this heat for 10 - 15 minutes or until desired thickness (the longer it simmers, the thicker is will become).
Take syrup off heat. Let the syrup cool to room temperature.
Transfer the syrup to a clean jar or bottle and store it in the refrigerator. It will be good for 2 - 3 weeks in the fridge (if it can even last that long!).
When to Use Simple Syrup
Quite literally whenever you want to sweeten something, use your new, homemade, delicious simple syrup. Here are some common uses:
Sweetening Cold Drinks
Sugar doesn’t dissolve well in cold liquids, which makes simple syrup the perfect sweetener for iced tea, lemonade, cold brew coffee, and cocktails. It blends smoothly without leaving gritty sugar at the bottom of your glass.
Cocktails and Mocktails
Many classic cocktails rely on simple syrup for balanced sweetness. Drinks like mojitos, margaritas, and whiskey sours use simple syrup to round out the flavors. It’s also great for non-alcoholic beverages, adding sweetness without overpowering other ingredients.
Baking and Desserts
Simple syrup can keep cakes moist by brushing it on layers before frosting. It also works well drizzled over fresh fruit, pancakes, or waffles. You can infuse the syrup with herbs, spices, or citrus zest to add extra flavor to your desserts.
Coffee and Tea
Add simple syrup to your hot or iced coffee and tea for a smooth, even sweetness. It dissolves quickly and enhances the natural flavors of your drink. (This is obviously why I am making simple syrup!)

Why Make Simple Syrup Instead of Using Sugar?
Simple syrup is superior to sugar when it comes to sweetening your drinks because it dissolves in any temperature. It only takes 20 minutes to make, and it's easy to super-customize your drinks when you use it. It's also pretty cheap to make at home! Simple syrup is a kitchen secret that can elevate everyday drinks and desserts. Once you try making it at home, you’ll find it hard to go back to plain sugar.
Cheers to you!
