My favorite flavor to get in my coffee is caramel, but it is also the one that I oftentimes am disappointed in. I only like certain caramel syrups; the rest taste too sweet and artificial for my liking. I can only assume that everyone has this problem, so I'd like to give you a quick guide on how to make the perfect caramel syrup at home for your coffee!

Why Make Caramel Syrup at Home?
Not only is is going to be objectively better tasting, since you can tweak the recipe to your liking, but it will also be better for you! No preservatives, just some good old sugar and water! And an added bonus: your kitchen will smell amazing while you make it!
Ingredients You’ll Need
To make classic caramel syrup, you only need a few simple ingredients:
Granulated sugar (1 cup)
Water (1 cup, but divided into 2 halves)
Vanilla extract (1 teaspoon)
A pinch of salt
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Caramel Syrup
1. Get your tools
You'll need a small saucepan on the stove, a whisk, and a mason jar to store it afterwards.
2. Dissolve Sugar in Water
Use the first half of the cup of water and the whole cup of sugar. Combine over medium high heat until sugar is dissolved and water is boiling.
3. Caramelize the Sugar
Turn the heat down to medium low and let the sugar water simmer. This will take about 18 - 22 minutes total. Stir occasionally. You want the syurp to become thick and the aroma to be a strong caramel scent.
4. Add the Remaining Water
This is the trickiest part. You want to add the remaining half cup of water to the boiling mixture, but if you do it too fast, it will ruing your syrup. Take the water at about room tempurature and add a little at a time, vigourously whisking as you add. You want to make sure the caramel doesn't clump as you add the water.
5. Stir in Vanilla and Salt
Now that you have a more liquid-y syrup, you can add your other ingredients and whisk them in well.
6. Cool and Store
Pour your beautiful homemade syrup into a jar that can be airtight (I use Mason Jars) and leave on the countertop until about room tempurature. Then you can store it in the fridge and use it up in the next 2-3 weeks.
Don't feel bad if your first batch doesn't turn out perfect! (My first batch burned at the bottom and then clumped so bad I couldn't even use it.) That's why we practice!

Using Your Caramel Syrup in Coffee
Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of caramel syrup to your brewed coffee or espresso. Stir well and top with frothed milk or cream for a homemade caramel latte. You can also drizzle syrup over whipped cream or ice cream for a decadent treat.
Final Thoughts on Homemade Caramel Syrup
If I can do it, you can do it! I like to make my syrups at home because then I can adjust the taste to suit my likes and preferences. So go out there, make some syrup, and drink some coffee!
Cheers to you!
